Self-Awareness is Key

Audit Yourself

Self-awareness is defined as “aware of oneself, including one’s traits, feelings, and behaviors.” “Conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives, and desires.”

How well do you know yourself? I promote self-discovery so much and based my entire book on that concept because I truly believe the greatest competitive advantage is knowing what your greatest competitive advantage is. The only way to discover your greatest competitive advantage is to become self-aware. I based my entire book on self-discovery and success in college. I base my entire Let’s March platform on education, millennials, and personal development. I focus on those areas because I know that I have expertise on those subjects. I didn’t write my book on “How to Make $1 million in College” because I’m aware of the fact that I have no idea how to do that. But I’m also aware of what subjects I am very knowledgeable about, and I make sure to capitalize on those areas.

Self-awareness is absolutely crucial because your success in life depends on it. It’s imperative that you really take some time to audit yourself and figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are. It’s okay if you’re not great at public speaking, playing sports, or being a leader. Everyone has their own path. Just because things like speaking, playing sports, and leadership are glorified in our society, doesn’t mean that’s what you should aspire towards.

I promise you, you have a skill or talent that most people in this world only wish they had. Personally, I would give anything to be a natural singer. But my ability to sing is nonexistent. Sure, I could spend a lot of time learning and get to be slightly above average at singing, but there are already other things that I can naturally excel at like speaking and writing. If your natural gift is to play the trumpet, then forget what everyone else says and play the trumpet. If you’re gifted in writing, then by all means write. But whatever your talent is, you should aspire to be the best in the world at that one thing. Mediocrity is never celebrated, and greatness is respected in any field, all over the world.

I’ve seen numerous people over the years try to be someone they’re not, and it’s painful to watch. Without becoming self-aware, you will struggle through life. But once you discover what separates you from everyone else, life becomes easy. Because usually what you’re good at is what you enjoy doing.

Become self-aware. Shake off the pressure of being the person society is trying to push you to be. Being you, and capitalizing on what you do best, is the only way you will leave an impact on this world. Self-awareness is key.
